Bob's Birthday Bash in aid of the BCHF
Today is Bob Smith day in the City of Vancouver, which is an excuse for everyone to go dancing and party. Mayor Gregor Robertson honoured Smith, who turns 90 today, with the honorary proclamation: "Bob Smith Day" in honour of the oldest regular at the Railway Club's Saturday afternoon roots/ rockabilly jam.
Close to 200 people attended Smith's birthday bash Sunday at Yaletown's Hamilton Street Grill with the cream of Vancouver's roots/ rockabilly scene performing live music, with the birthday boy among those on the packed dance floor.
Smith's grandson, Scott Smith, and his Terminal Station Band, were joined by Butch Murphy and Joe Rotundo of the Bughouse 5, Ana Bon Bon, Cam Wagner, Jimy Now, Jimmy Roy, Graham Brown and the Prairie Dogs and others performing at the family-organized party where the mayor's proclamation was read.
Murphy and his band mates brought the house down with a rousing rendition of the B-5 classic tune, "The King of Saturday Night," in honour of Smith who, as the proclamation states, "faithfully served the City of Vancouver as an engineer with the school board from 1949 to 1985 . . . and whereas Bob Smith has entertained generations with his dancing in the City of Vancouver [and] has proved that 90 is the new 30."
